It has been a very productive year for the ECOBAC team and we want to share our most recent accomplishments.

¡Our Catalog FIBB almost reaches 3,000 whales!

We are pleased to share with you that we have just updated our FIBB catalog up to the 2020 season! With this update, we now have a database with more than 9,600 recordings and 2,900 different whale species.

We are almost up to date and for the moment we are currently working on comparing photographs taken over the last two seasons (2021 and 2022).

Collaborating in new scientific papers

During the last year, we collaborated in the publication of 5 new scientific publications, where we disclose important data from our research!

Scientific publications are very important because they help us better understand and protect species. Without science or data, there is no Conservation.

Recent scientific collaborations

We have a Bryde´s whale catalog!

Did you know that Bryde’s whales (Balaenoptera brydei) are the least studied whales on a global scale?

This is because they are very fast animals that we only see by chance, also they are almost impossible to photograph!

Our catalog includes 33 different individuals, of which 6 are mothers with their calves!

The means of identification of a Bryde´s whale is made from through the dorsal fins.

To make identification less difficult we add nicknames to the whales!

We also have an Orca Catalog!

Did you know that the killer whale is the world’s top predator in the oceans?

Yes, this marine mammal is a visitor to Banderas Bay. Identification of different Killer whales, like Bryde’s whales, is made through their dorsal fins.

To date and with records since the year 2000, we have 39 different individuals!

We also use nicknames to identify them faster!

RABEN equipment!

It is critical for the Whale Disentanglement Network, RABEN, that our volunteers are well-equipped during their trips to the sea to rescue whales.

We purchase uniforms and safety equipment, such as t-shirts, hats, gloves, and first aid kits. Also, an airtight box to store tools such as cutting knives in order to better organize, be easily accessible, and be kept in a better condition.

Thank you for the support!

On behalf of the entire ECOBAC team, we thank the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and all our collaborators, volunteers, and supporters for their constant support. Thanks to you we achieved our goals!

We also thank the FIBB catalog collaborators: Ecotours de México, Natours Vallarta, Vallarta Adventures, La Orca de Sayulita, Centro Regional de Investigación Pesquera-INP, Cielo Abierto, Discover Pacific Tours, Instituto Tecnológico de Bahía de Banderas and Ocean Friendly.
